Understanding Invisalign Braces

Felecia Brewer

If you have misaligned teeth, your dentist inspects your mouth and recommends the treatment he or she thinks is best for your unique condition. The most common treatment options for misaligned teeth are traditional braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces and Invisalign braces. Here's what you need to know to understand Invisalign braces better:

Traditional Braces

These are the typical metal braces you normally see most children or even adults wearing. They are the cheapest option available and that is why you might mostly find them popular. If you are a person who is extremely cautious about your appearance and would not want braces to alter the way you look, these might not be an option for you. That is why there are other different types of braces.

Lingual Braces

These are the same as traditional braces; however, instead of being attached to the front side of your teeth where everyone can see them, they are attached behind your teeth.

Ceramic Braces

These types of braces resemble the traditional braces, but instead of using metal, they use ceramic that is the same colour as your teeth. It is quite difficult for someone to notice that you are wearing them until they come close to you. They will also not affect your appearance as much as metallic braces would.

Invisalign Braces

These do not resemble the braces mentioned above. They look like mouth guards made of clear plastic. Unlike the braces mentioned above, you can take them out freely, but this is not recommended. The longer they stay in your mouth, the more effective they are. That is why you might hear some people saying that Invisalign is not effective. It depends on whether you are using them correctly, meaning they are effective.

What benefits do you enjoy from them? You enjoy their invisibility and stylish design, which not only looks aesthetically pleasing but improves your appearance.

Another difference from the braces mentioned above is that as your teeth align, traditional, lingual and ceramic braces need to be tightened. In the case of Invisalign, you need a replacement, meaning it can be expensive.

Invisalign is also not suitable for children. This is mainly because a child might frequently take the aligners out (teeth alignment might not be effective) or require multiple replacements (the child's teeth are developing daily, which when coupled with the fact that the teeth are also aligning and needing Invisalign replacement, can mean multiple replacement times).

Important Note

Not everyone is a good candidate for Invisalign, your dentist has to examine you first to know whether Invisalign will work.
